Using the Cavity Resonance Method for Fast Calculation of Power Plane Impedance

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Rapid calculation of power plane impedance for proper power distribution network (PDN) design is vital during the pre-layout phase of PCB designs. Many different options and configurations need to be analyzed in order to insure the optimum trade off between performance and cost. The location of the decoupling capacitors is important, so simple circuit analysis is not sufficient to include this information therefore a full wave solver is required. Traditional three dimensional, full wave solvers require significant amounts of computer memory and time for a solution, and while highly accurate, they are not the best solution for this type of analysis. This work uses the two-dimensional Cavity Resonance Method to solve a number of predefined power plane configurations and reports the speed to solve configurations which vary from simple to complex.
