The Single Board Computer: A Practical Alternative to a Custom Designed Microsystem

Abstract

The concept of a single board computer (SBC) is introduced and applications in which it can be effectively utilized are outlined. The practicality of a single board computer is demonstrated through an analysis of the addition of an Intel iSBC 86/14 single board computer to an existing robot vision system built around an Apple II Plus computer. Included in this examination is an overview of the original and enhanced configurations, a description of the modifications performed to integrate the single board computer into the vision system, and an analysis of overall design goals.
