Abstract

The limiting distribution coefficients α = lim([HC] g / [HC] sln ) (HC stands for "hydrocarbon") corresponding to [HC] g → 0 were measured for solutions of methane, propane, and n-hexane in the water-sulfuric acid system at acid concentrations of 0 to 100% in the temperature range 283-343 K. Substrate structure, solvent composition, and temperature effects on the solubility were studied. In the studied medium composition and temperature ranges, the equation (logα) ≡ logα E - φ W logα W - φ A logα A = Lφ(V E /V), where φ W and φ A are the volume fractions of water and acid, respectively, and V E is the excess volume, describes experimental data much more accurately than a similar equation with (logα) E in mole fractions.
