Abstract
The University of Missouri recently procured a 5-axis waterjet cutting system to perform cutting tasks specified in a major research project. While the blending of precision with waterjet cutting is not new, the degree of precision required for this project, and the specifics of the cuts, made the multi-axis approach necessary. The paper will discuss some of the obstacles encountered in obtaining, installing, and maintaining a precision 3 dimensional cutting station. Many considerations are relatively obvious, but there are also those that are not, and the marriage of 5 axis robotics with abrasive laden high pressure waterjets presents some interesting challenges. © BHR Group 2006 Water Jetting.
