Black Holes and Other Exotica at the Large Hadron Collider

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Black holes and other exotica might be produced at the forthcoming Large Hadron Collider if the fundamental scale of gravity is near the TeV scale. Simulations of black holes and other proposed physics beyond the Standard Model, supersymmetry and string theory are presented here. Black hole events are simulated using the CATFISH Monte Carlo generator, simulations of string resonances use PYTHIA and supersymmetric simulations use a combination of ISAJET and PYTHIA. Our analysis shows that black holes can be discriminated from supersymmetry and string resonances can be distinguished from Standard Model processes and black hole events. In particular, isolated high transverse momentum leptons allow discrimination between black holes and supersymmetry. Black holes and string resonances can be distinguished using Z0 bosons and photons with high transverse momentum. Additional discrimination is provided by the analysis of energy, momenta and event-shape variables.
